Pottery Wheel Sessions

try your hand at throwing your own pot!!

Have you ever looked at people using a pottery wheel and thought…

‘that looks easy?’

or more importantly

‘that looks fun!’

What is included in our wheel session?

Our ‘Have a Go’ wheel session really is the most fun you can have with a chunk of clay! After a demonstration from one of our experienced and enthusiastic team you’ll have two chunks of clay to ‘have a go’ with. The session will last for 60-90 minutes and is suitable for ages 3 to 103!!

Whether you want to bring your girl crew for some giggles, your family to get competitive or you partner to get a little bit Ghosty, this session is perfect for you!

What to Expect?

Groups of up to six will use the wheel room at one time. There will always be one instructor. Here are a few other tips to help you enjoy your session…

  • You’ll get dirty. Don’t wear your best white jeans or party dress! We’ll provide aprons for you, and the clay does dry to dust and wash out, so if you do get clay on your clothes it won’t stain permanently.
  • Sessions will start on time. If you miss the demonstration there may not be time to do another, especially if there are others in your group. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the start time of your session.
  • We will try to make sure you leave with something!
  • We usually have a choice of stoneware or terracotta clay available. They have different textures and properties. Listen to our instructor before deciding which to use. Or try one of each!!
  • To have fun!!

We encourage you to leave perfectionism at the door, along with any ideas on what you want to make!! Our sessions are to try something new, or to practice a once tried skill. To laugh, have fun and smile!!

What not to Expect!
  • To create the most perfectly even, cylindrical and symmetrical bowl/mug! YouTube has a habit of making things look easy!! Enjoy the process without focusing on the end result, and we’re sure you’ll love what you make!
  • To make a huge salad dish or vase. You’ll have 400-800g of clay. We’ll give you the right amount for the size of your hands!
  • To make two identical items, or to make the same as your friend. It’s handmade, no two are the same and that’s the beauty!
  • You have two chunks of clay. That might not mean you leave with two pieces. Your clay can get overworked, and will eventually give up! Listen to our guidance, learn to love wonkiness, and know when to stop!!
  • An immaculately clean and shiny wheel room. The room is cleaned regularly, but there are likely to be clay splatters on the wall and floor, maybe even the stools! It is a room where you should feel comfortable making a mess and creating a masterpiece!
  • We use imported wheels which are a little smaller than Australian made…25cm plate vs 33cm plate. Since you’ll be working with 400-800g of clay, and not creating a huge crock pot, they are perfect! They are suitable for all ages. Our imported wheels allow us to keep your sessions affordable, but also mean we can take them into schools, community centres & workplaces, supporting our goal to make pottery more accessible for all!
